When it comes to orthodontics, many patients are full of questions about their oral health and what they should expect with their treatment. Dr. Anisa Omar and our team are happy to answer any questions you may have during your appointments. We also invite you to become more informed about orthodontics today by reviewing the following information:

Q: What is the best age to visit the orthodontist?

A: We encourage patients to begin seeing an orthodontist at age seven to monitory their teeth and jaw development. However, you are welcome to visit East Gate Orthodontics at any age. We invite children, teens, and adults to meet with Dr. Anisa Omar for quality orthodontic care.

Q: How can I care for my braces or orthodontic appliance?

A: Regular dental care is very importance when you have braces or an orthodontic appliance, such as a retainer, because food and plaque can build up between the wires and brackets and create tooth decay. Use a dentist-recommended toothpaste and brush gently but thoroughly. If you have a removable orthodontic appliance, take it out while eating and store it in a safe container. Clean your appliance with a toothbrush and toothpaste or denture cleaner. Do not place it in the dishwasher.

Avoid foods that are hard, sticky, chewy, or crunchy, or that could get stuck in your braces. You may need to go without some of your favorite foods for a while, but your new, stronger smile will be worth it! Please visit the orthodontist regularly for adjustments to ensure your teeth and jaw alignment progress properly.

Q: How can I take care of my teeth while wearing braces or a retainer?

A: It is important to brush your teeth with fluoridated toothpaste after every meal. If your retainer is removable, store it safely in its container during mealtimes or while you eat. Clean your retainer with a toothbrush and toothpaste or by soaking it in denture cleaner—do not place it in boiling water or the dishwasher. Avoid sugary, sticky, or hard foods, as well as any small foods that could become stuck in your braces. Visit your orthodontist and dentist regularly for adjustments and dental cleanings.

Q: Will I need to brush my teeth more often with braces?

A: You should brush your teeth at least three times a day to remove any food caught in your braces. Floss daily to remove any food or plaque that your toothbrush could not reach. Dr. Anisa Omar will gladly demonstrate how to clean your teeth while wearing braces.

Q: Will I still need dental checkups every six months while wearing braces?

A: Because food and plaque can become easily trapped in your braces, it is even more important to visit the dentist regularly. Your dentist will work closely with our orthodontist to prevent cavities and help your teeth stay strong and healthy.

Q: How long will I need to wear my braces?

A: The duration of treatment for braces depends on each patient. On average, most treatments last 22 months, but can range between 6 and 30 months.

Q: Do braces hurt?

A: You may experience some tenderness for a few days as your teeth, cheeks, and lips become accustomed to the braces.

Q: Will braces interfere with my daily schedule and activities?

A: Some activities, such as contact sports and playing an instrument, may require some adjustments. Our orthodontist may recommend a mouth guard to protect your braces and teeth during sports. Overall, though, your new braces should not interfere with your school activities or hobbies.

Q: How do I schedule my next appointment?

A: You are welcome to contact our orthodontic office at any time to schedule an appointment with the help of our front office team. Please let us know if you are a new patient or a referral so that we can provide you with all the necessary information.

We hope this information has been helpful for you. Please feel free to contact East Gate Orthodontics at 703-542-6336 to learn more about orthodontics in Chantilly, Virginia, or to present any other questions or concerns you may have. We look forward to hearing from you!
